Xtream Codes: what it is and how to set it up on TV and iPhone

· Checked with BurgTV 1.3.7 (TV) · 1.2.1 (Android) · 1.0.15 (iPhone/iPad)

Received a server address, a username and a password instead of a playlist link? That is an Xtream Codes login. Here is what it means, how it differs from M3U and Portal, how to enter it in BurgTV on Fire TV, Google TV, Android, iPhone and iPad, and what the login errors mean. You bring your own source.

What is Xtream Codes

Xtream Codes was the name of a server software for IPTV services. The product itself is no longer sold, but its way of logging in is still used by many servers, so players call it “Xtream Codes” or “Xtream API”. Instead of one long playlist link you get three details: a server address, a username and a password. With them the player asks the server for channels, movies, series and the TV guide, already sorted into categories. For BurgTV it is only a way to connect to the source you already have.

Xtream Codes, M3U or Portal: which one do you have?

What you need

  • Server URL, for example http://example.com:8080. The port is the number after the colon; if there is none, BurgTV uses the standard one (80 for http, 443 for https).
  • Username and password, exactly as your source wrote them: capital letters count.
  • BurgTV installed on your TV, phone or tablet.

Set it up on the TV, step by step

  1. Open BurgTV on Fire TV, Google TV or Android TV. At first launch the Welcome screen guides you; later go to Settings > My Lists > Add playlist.
  2. Choose Xtream Codes (“Server, username and password”).
  3. In Server URL the field already starts with http://: complete the address, or replace it with https:// if your source uses https. Add the port if you have one.
  4. Fill in Username and Password, give the playlist a name and press Continue.
  5. Channels and the TV guide load automatically. On the TV, Movies and Series are part of Premium.

Only have an M3U link that contains username= and password=? Paste it as an M3U playlist: on the TV BurgTV recognizes it and adds it as Xtream Codes.

On Android phones, iPhone and iPad

Go to Settings > Content sources > Add, pick the Xtream Codes tab and fill in Server URL, Username and Password. You add the login on each device: nothing is copied between TV and phone. The iPhone and iPad app also shows the expiry date in Content sources.

Login errors and how to fix them

  • “Error loading playlist: Xtream Codes authentication failed” (TV): on the TV this one message covers both a refused login and a server that cannot be reached. Check, in this order: the server address with http or https and the port, then username and password (no spaces at the end), then that your access is still active.
  • “Wrong credentials: check username and password.” (Android, iPhone): the server answered and refused the login. Retype them carefully; letters like l and I or 0 and O are easy to mix up.
  • “Server unreachable, check URL and network” (Android) or “URL unreachable or invalid.” (iPhone): the address, port or protocol is wrong, or the server is down. http://example.com:8080 and https://example.com are two different addresses.
  • Access expired: BurgTV reads the expiry date from the server. On the TV it appears in My Lists as “Expires” with the date, and the app warns you 7 days and 3 days before and on the day itself. Renewing is a matter between you and your source: BurgTV does not sell or renew subscriptions.
  • Works on one device but not on another at the same time: many accesses allow only 1 or 2 connections at once, and every device or Multi-View window counts as one.
  • No TV guide: see blank TV guide: causes and fixes.

TV guide with Xtream Codes

With Xtream Codes the guide comes automatically from the server, on TV, Android and iPhone. If some channels stay empty, add an additional XMLTV source in Settings > TV Guide; if the times are off, use Time shift (from -12 to +12 hours per playlist). On the TV the guide covers up to 3 days for free and up to 14 with Premium. Details in how to add an EPG guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is Xtream Codes?

A way to connect to an IPTV source with a server address, a username and a password instead of a playlist link. Channels, movies, series and the TV guide arrive already organized.

Xtream Codes or M3U: which is better?

If you have both, Xtream Codes is usually more convenient: the TV guide and the categories arrive by themselves. M3U is for when you only have a link. BurgTV supports both.

“Xtream Codes authentication failed”: what do I do?

Check the server address (http or https, port), then username and password, then that your access is still active. On the TV the same message also appears when the server cannot be reached.

Where do I see when my access expires?

On the TV in My Lists, next to the playlist; the app also warns you 7 and 3 days before. On iPhone and iPad in Content sources.

Can I add several Xtream accounts?

Yes. On TV and Android the free plan handles 1 playlist; with Premium playlists are unlimited.

Is setting up Xtream Codes legal?

Yes. The player is neutral; legality depends on your source. Use only accesses you have the right to use.
