Your Jellyfin server on Fire TV and Google TV with BurgTV

Running a Jellyfin server at home? BurgTV opens it as one of your lists on Fire TV, Google TV and Android TV, and also on Android phones, iPhone and iPad: your server’s movies, shows and channels next to your M3U and Xtream Codes playlists. You bring the source — BurgTV provides no content.

What is Jellyfin

Jellyfin is a free, open-source personal media server: you install it on your own computer or home server and it organizes your own files (movies, shows and, if you set it up, live TV) into a library with artwork and details. Jellyfin is the server; BurgTV is the player that connects to it and plays its content on your TV. In the app the option is labeled “Personal media server”.

Connect your Jellyfin server to the TV

  1. Open Settings > My Lists > Add playlist. On first launch the same step appears in the Welcome screen.
  2. Out of M3U, Xtream Codes, Jellyfin and Portal, pick Jellyfin.
  3. Fill in Playlist Name (any name you like), Server URL (your server’s address; the app shows an example such as http://192.168.1.50:8096) and Username.
  4. Enter your Jellyfin user’s Password. It is optional: if the user has no password on the server, leave it blank.
  5. Press Continue: BurgTV signs in and imports movies, shows with seasons and episodes, and any live channels.

Changing the Jellyfin server or user requires a new sign-in: delete the list in My Lists and add it again.

What you get in BurgTV

BurgTV asks the server for the original file (direct play, no conversion requested) and plays it with its own engines, ExoPlayer with FFmpeg and libVLC, up to 4K when the file and the device support it.

  • MoviesYour library’s movies in the Movies section, grouped by genre, with artwork from your server.
  • SeriesYour shows in the Series section, with seasons and episodes already imported and a plot for each episode.
  • Live TVIf Jellyfin live TV is set up on your server, its channels show up in the TV section.
  • One app for everythingYour Jellyfin server sits next to your M3U, Xtream Codes and Portal playlists.

Network: where the server needs to be

Your TV must be able to reach the address you type in Server URL. The simplest case is the same home network: use the local address of the computer running Jellyfin. To use it away from home you need an address reachable from the internet, which you set up yourself on the server or router. BurgTV does not create remote access, and files go straight from your server to your device.

If the connection fails, check the address (with http:// or https:// and the port), username and password, and that the server is running.

BurgTV or the official Jellyfin app?

If you only watch Jellyfin, the official app may be all you need. BurgTV makes sense when you want your server and your playlists in one place.

  • The official Jellyfin app is built for Jellyfin: it works with the whole server, its libraries and users.
  • BurgTV brings Jellyfin together with your other sources (M3U, Xtream Codes, Portal) in a single app, with one interface for everything.
  • In BurgTV the server is read-only: watch progress stays in the app and is not sent back to Jellyfin. You manage your library in Jellyfin.
  • BurgTV does not take the TV guide (EPG) from the Jellyfin server.
